Femcare
Femcare provides a full range of reproductive health care services including surgical and medical abortion, also called 'abortion by pill.' We offer appointments during the week as well as on Saturdays.
NC STATE LAW REQUIRES THAT YOU CALL TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN ABORTION AT LEAST 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE
Surgical Abortion Information · Surgical abortions are provided until the 12th week of pregnancy (12 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period.) Appointments begin with ultrasound exams scheduled from 9:00AM-10:30AM on Wednesdays and Fridays and from 4:00PM-5:00PM on Fridays for patients desiring a Saturday procedure. Those patients are asked to return at 9:00AM on Saturday. On Wednesdays and Fridays, following the ultrasound, you will see a video, read information about surgical abortion, fill out your medical history, have blood drawn and then have an individual consultation with the doctor which includes a pelvic exam and a discussion about birth control options. Surgeries begin at approximately 1:00PM and proceed in the order that ultrasounds were done. There is a one hour recovery period following the procedure. On Wednesdays and Fridays, you should plan to be in the clinic for a total of 5-6 hours. On Saturdays, because ultrasounds and blood work are done the day before, you should plan to be in the clinic for 3-4 hours. · The fee is $480.00 which includes IV sedation, take home medications, samples of birth control pills or Nuvaring and a three week check up at no extra charge. If we find that you have a negative blood type, you will need a Rhogam injection and this will cost an additional $40. If you are in a low income category, you may be eligible for a lower fee and the National Abortion Federation (NAF) will pay the remainder for you by voucher. The NAF fund is only available in states where Medicaid does not pay for abortion. · One support person is allowed inside the clinic waiting room per patient. This person must enter the clinic with you and will only be allowed in the waiting room. To fill the need for support when you have to separate from your chosen support person, we have doulas from the Open Umbrella Collective available on most clinic days. These are women who volunteer their time to serve our patients in any way that they are needed - from talking to listening to hand holding. · Everyone entering the clinic will need an ID on a state of Federal level such as a drivers license or ID card from the DMV. Your I.D. will be checked before you enter the clinic by a guard at the front door. · We accept cash, debit cards, Mastercard, Visa or Discover, but no checks. If you bring a credit card it must be in your name or the name of the person who comes with you. · NC requires a parental consent if the patient is under the age of 18. · All patients are given a local block and nitrous oxide. IV sedation (Versed and fentanyl) is available at no additional fee. If you think you might opt for IV sedation, you should bring someone with you to drive you home. · Wear warm, loose-fitting comfortable clothing and wear socks or bring a pair of socks with you. If you wear thong underwear, please wear regular underwear on your appointment day, because you will be wearing a pad afterwards. · Children will not be permitted in the clinic on days when abortions are scheduled. · Large purses or backpacks are not allowed. If you or your guest carry knives, guns, Mace or any weapon of any kind, please leave it at home on your appointment day. We recommend that you eat breakfast on the morning of your appointment, but once you arrive at the clinic, we ask that you have nothing more to eat. · You should shower or bathe before your appointment. We ask that you please do not wear perfume or heavily perfumed body lotion. · There will be anti-choice demonstrators in front of the clinic. Please remember that they are not with the clinic, and you do not have to stop to take their information or to talk to them. They cannot follow you past the gates of our parking lot. However, once you are in our parking lot, we have volunteer escorts who may approach your car to walk you to our front door and help distract you from the demonstrators out on the sidewalk.
Medical Abortion Information · Medical abortions are offered on Wednesdays and Fridays starting with ultrasound appointment times from 10:40AM-11:30AM. If the ultrasound confirms that you are no more than 7 weeks pregnant (7 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period), then you will read our medical abortion information and fill out your medical history. You will then have a detailed conversation with the doctor about the process and about birth control options. · The fee is $580.00. If you are found to have a negative blood type, you will be given a Rhogam injection which costs an additional $40.
