Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening
Femcare provides a broad range of STI testing and treatment at low-cost.

Tubal Ligation- Sterilization
A consultation can be scheduled to discuss this outpatient laparoscopic surgery that will be performed at the Asheville Surgery Center. If you have insurance we will call to precertify the surgery. If you have medicaid you have to be at least 21 years old and sign a sterilization consent form and wait 31 days before performing the surgery. This surgery can be done using a burning technique called cautery, or using Filshie clips. It should be considered permanent and not reversible. You may have a tubal ligation even if you don't have any children.

Annual Exam/Birth Control
Femcare provides annual exams for women of all ages. We recommend a yearly exam and breast check for women over the age of 18 or women who are sexually active. The fee is $90.00 which includes a pap smear, a prescription for your choice of contraceptive for one year, and we are usually able to give you three free samples of your birth control method if available.

Depo-Provera Injections
Femcare provides Depo-Provera as a form of contraception. This is an injectable contraceptive that you receive every three months. When taken as scheduled-just 4 times a year- it is more than 99% efffective. The fee for this injection is $50.

IUD (intrauterine device)
We offer 2 types of IUD's: Mirena, which is 99.9% effective and contains a progesterone type hormone which will lighten the menstrual period. It is completely reversible upon removal and is effective for 5 years. The fee is $750.
Paraguard is an IUD which contains no hormones but contains copper. This IUD can make the mentrual period heavier. It is approximately 97% effective and it effective for 10 years. It is also completely reversible upon removal. The fee is also $750.

NuvaRing
The NuvaRing is a clear, flexible ring about the size of a half dollar that is worn inside the vagina for 3 continuous weeks. The NuvaRing releases a steady flow of hormones that are very similar to the homones in the birth control pill, but in a lower dose. The hormones in the ring and the pill stop the growth of eggs in the ovaries so ovulation does not occur, thereby preventing pregnancy.

Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch
Ortho Evra is a once-a-week birth control patch worn on the skin to prevent pregnancy. This is done by releasing a steady flow of hormones which prevent the release of an egg from the ovaries.

Implanon
Implanon is a 3 year implant that is inserted into the arm in about 5 minutes. This method of birth control uses only a progesterone type of hormone to prevent the release of an egg from the ovary. Implanon does not contain estrogen, which makes it safe for smokers. It has the lowest level of hormone of any of the hormonal contraceptives, which makes weight gain and other side effects very unlikely. However, it does cause unpredictable menstrual bleeding. The fee for this is $660.
